Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Foreman, Journeyman, or other qualified person; installs, maintains and repairs high voltage electrical substation apparatus.
  • Utilizes various meters, testing, and diagnostic devices to perform routine testing and troubleshoots equipment problems.
  • Performs wiring of substation equipment; dismantles and overhauls circuit breakers, transformers, regulators and associated substation equipment.
  • Performs primary electrical switching, as directed by the switching center, to de-energize equipment for routine and emergency responses.
  • Maintains a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practice.
  • Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
  • Support substation design and technical specifications under the guidance of senior personnel.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, including service trucks, control houses, and storerooms.
  • Respond to trouble calls related to substations, often in various weather conditions.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and demonstrating safe driving habits.
  • Complete training courses and competency demonstrations as part of the apprenticeship program
  • A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial, and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

 

 

The essentials

  • One year of experience fixing mechanical, electrical or electronic components.
  • Possess a valid US Driver’s License.

 

The preferred

  • Interpreting and following through with complex oral and written instructions.
  • Troubleshooting electrical AC and DC circuits and basic mechanical principals.
  • Utilizing hand tools and handheld power tools.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory.
  • Use basic computer programs that relate to installing and maintaining substation equipment.

 

Additional information

  • This position’s work mode is on-site. The employee will report to an SCE facility or in the field location.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • This position is a Department of Transportation (DOT) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. 
  • The primary work location for this position is Bakersfield. However, daily work will be predominantly at various field locations in the AOR.
  • Qualified applications with arrest or conviction records will be considered for employment in accordance with the Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance for Employers and the California Fair Chance Act.
  • Position will require up to 20% of travel and working out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
  • This position is identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
  • The Apprentice Substation Electrician Program is a three-year, paid apprenticeship.  Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the program, obtaining and maintaining a Class A license.  Failure to satisfy these requirements may result in termination of employment.

 

 

Testing

  • This position requires testing and applicants who continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. For information guides, please reference tests: (Edison Individual Contributor Workstyles #8203); (EEI CAST Test #5108); (Apprentice Electrician Test #2100); (Substation Electrician Physical Performance Test #4022). Candidates, who have previously passed these assessments, in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position. Testing will occur in Rosemead, CA and Alhambra, CA.
