Become an Apprentice Substation Electrician at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be responsible for operating substation equipment, maintaining substation equipment and installing and commissioning new equipment. As an Apprentice Substation Electrician, your work will impact the transmission and distribution of power to Southern California?

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist in the construction, operation, and maintenance of electric substations and transmission facilities.
  • Learn and perform high voltage switching operations and troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Conduct inspections, testing, and repairs on substation equipment, including transformers, breakers, and control systems.
  • Support substation design and technical specifications under the guidance of senior personnel.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, including service trucks, control houses, and storerooms.
  • Respond to trouble calls related to substations, often in various weather conditions.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and demonstrate safe driving habits.
  • Complete training courses and competency demonstrations as part of the apprenticeship program
  • A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial, and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • One year of experience in repairing mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems or components.
  • Possess a valid US Driver’s License.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience or training in electrical theory.
  • Experience in general construction work.
  • Experience using hand tools and handheld power tools, as well as basic computer programs related to the installation and maintenance of substation equipment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to interpret and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to drive innovative solutions and effectively solve problems.

 

Additional Information

 

  • This position’s work mode is on-site. The employee will report to an SCE facility or in the field location.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is (Eldorado substation located in Boulder NV). However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time in many other areas within the service territory. Typically, there will be a requirement to work out of a hotel for weeks at a time with an expectation for out of hotel work at approximately 40% of the year.
  • This role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including high heat
  • Position will require up to 40% travel and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory. 
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
  • This position is a 4/10 schedule.
  • The successful candidate will be expected and must be able to obtain a Class A License within 6 months of being hired.
  • This position is a Department of Transportation (DOT) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. 
  • Relocation does not apply to this position.

 

Testing

 

  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Reference our Information Guides for the following tests:  EEI CAST test (#5108), Apprentice Electrician Test (#2100), and Substation Electrician Physical Performance Test (#4022). Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position.
