Become a Senior Engineer 1, for the Distribution Generation Interconnection team at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this Job, you will be responsible for conducting technical analyses related to the interconnection of generation resources to the SCE Distribution System under the Rule 21 Tariff and the Wholesale Distribution Access Tariff (WDAT). Your work will include performing studies to identify the interconnection facilities and/or distribution upgrades necessary to connect Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) safely and reliably to SCE’s distribution grid. Additionally, the Senior Engineer I (SE1) will support distribution-related activities, including strategic initiatives and participation in regulatory proceedings (e.g., General Rate Case, Rule 21 modifications) in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders

 

 

The main work you will perform may include:

 

  • Perform analysis on power flow software such as GE Positive Synchronous Load Flow, Eaton CYME, etc.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable tariffs, regulations, standards and codes.
  • Experience performing complicated technical/engineering studies, to perform thorough and objective analysis and developing sound technical recommendations.
  • Develop distribution scope and projects for all levels of complexity, including licensing support to interconnect distributed energy resources safely and reliably.
  • Provide guidance to other engineers in the group and for leading teams and activities related to generation interconnection studies and initiatives. This can include representing the company needs at the local government agencies, CEC and CPUC, and may serve as an expert witness, as needed.
  • Responsible for determining short- and long-term solutions, which includes providing recommendations, seeking concurrence, presenting findings, and assisting with the development and implementation of training.
  • Work in close collaboration with various departments such as, T&D, Engineering, System Operations, Grid Interconnection and Contract Development, Major Project Organization, Regulatory Policy and Affairs, Public Affairs, Real Estate, Telecomm, Finance, and Law.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees engineers performing diagnostics, monitoring and inspecting equipment, and reviewing grid technologies, building relationships to facilitate cross-functional knowledge transfer of related work groups
  • Leads the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate project status, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Collaborate and lead with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless development, integration and implementation of future technologies and asset performance management strategies
  • Assists in a variety of engineering and business initiatives and grid strategies, including development of innovative procedures and design recommendations
  • Provides support for new equipment installation and startup, then leads the hand over processes to the ramp and sustaining phases
  • Leads junior engineers in investigation of threats on the distribution system infrastructure based on observations and findings
  • Gathers and correlates basic data using engineering studies and procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems
  • Facilitates training and professional development opportunities for engineering team members to enhance their skills and knowledge

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.
  • Seven or more years of experience performing engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.
  • Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as Engineer or Power System Planner in an electric utility or power industry with Transmission and/or Distribution electric system modeling or system planning focused experience.
  • Experience with generation interconnection studies, policy, regulation and tariffs.
  • Strong communication and writing skills with the ability to communicate complicated technical issues in a succinct manner.
  • Experience with power system transmission or distribution analysis tools, such as PowerWorld, PSLF, EMS, CYME, CAPE, ReGrid, and MDI or other similar software.
  • Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with an emphasis in Power or master’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • CA Professional Engineering License in Electrical Engineering.

 

Additional Information

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is Pomona. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at (alternate work location).
  • Position will require up to 15% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory. 
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
